October 2022

Starting from humble beginnings, the Club was founded by Glen Hilton.  Glen, who recently announced his retirement from competitive athletics after 34 years of active competition, is a former England Cross Country Runner, was North East Junior XC Champion 5 times and won the Junior Great North Run.

Glen saw the need for a local junior athletics club to serve Northallerton and the surrounding area.  Without an obvious sports ground or track, he approached his friend Trevor Howe, Chairman of the Scruton Cricket Club and started Allerton Junior Athletics Club in 2014 using Scruton Cricket Club as a base. Scruton Cricket Club has an illustrious history and had an unbeatable team in the 1950s.  It enjoyed further success in the 1990s and opened a new Club Pavilion in July 2000 on the present site.  Chairman, Trevor Howe, personally built the ‘Scruton Long Room’ above the pavilion which houses a wonderful museum of village cricket and village life with pictures and memorabilia of this famous club.  The club recruits junior players from the local area – details can be found at https://scruton.play-cricket.com/

Allerton Juniors started small, meeting once a week in Scruton Cricket Club’s glorious grounds. However, membership rapidly increased and Allerton Juniors soon outgrew the space available.

The Club’s training venue then moved to Hillside Rural Activities Park in Knayton, initially training on Sunday afternoons and then adding a more informal road-based training on Wednesday evenings, meeting at the Northallerton Leisure Centre.

Allerton Juniors has continued to grow and meets on Sunday afternoons at Knayton and Wednesday evenings at Northallerton Rugby Club.  The Club has both competitive sprint and endurance sections and competes in Cross Country, Track, Road Races, Relays and Indoor Athletics events across Yorkshire and the North East.  The Club is thriving with a waiting list in most of the younger age groups.

2021/22 was the club’s most successful year to date, seeing no fewer than 30 North Yorkshire Vests.  10 athletes represented North Yorkshire at the National Cross Country Championships and 1 in the National Track Championships.  Together with its sister club for track, Darlington Harriers, Allerton Juniors came 3rd in Division 1 of the North East Youth Development League in 2022 – a major achievement for such a relatively small and young club.  Head Coach and Club Founder Glen Hilton said ‘I am so proud of the achievements of all our athletes.  I am a very competitive coach and as an athlete I never gave an inch to any of my competitors.  We enjoy tremendous success as our talented athletes train and race hard.  Every week I coach young people who give their all in a sport that I, and they, love.  But it is not just their successes that makes me want to coach.  I love seeing our athletes grow and develop.  Athletes like Freya Wilford who has just come back from a nasty injury on the track in the summer and achieved a personal best in the 60m and 200m at the Yorkshire Indoor Open Meeting last weekend.  Or athletes like Cory Southern who I first met aged 6 who has enjoyed his running so much that he competed in his first NYSD Cross Country race last weekend and loved it.  Harriet and Evelyn Rodwell aged 10 and 13 who wore the Allerton Junior pink and blue vest for the first time last weekend in the Rabbit Run. And athletes like Freya Garnet aged just 9 who completed her first Junior Great North Run on 8th October.  I feel humbled by their enthusiasm and I urge other young people to give it a try.’

The Club’s success was celebrated recently with over 120 athletes, parents, coaches and helpers attending the Club’s Annual Presentation Evening.  The Club was honoured to have Shot Put Coach Paul Wilson as Guest Speaker. Paul recently coached Scot Lincoln to a Bronze Medal in the Commonwealth Games and also coached Chase Ealey to a Gold Medal in the recent World Championships.  Paul said ‘People that inspire me are the athletes and coaches at clubs like Allerton Juniors.  Seeing the athletes happy, smiling and clapping each other is why I attend club events like this.  I know Scott would have loved to be here to show off his Bronze Medal to the people of Northallerton and your Club.  If I have one piece of advice to give it is this – never give up, anything is possible.’

Paul presented awards to Islay Wilson and Jake Holmes as female and male athletes of the year, to individual winners in each age group for cross country and track, and all athletes who participated in the North East Youth Development League 2022 received a medal to celebrate coming third.  Club Chairman Peter Stanley said ‘I am so proud of how this Club and its athletes and coaches continue to grow and develop and feel privileged to be its Chairman. I would like to thank Club Sponsors Colin Hutson Accounting Ltd and the Lance Corporal Ben Hyde Memorial Trust for their continued support which will ensure Allerton Juniors can continue to provide inclusive athletics to juniors in Northallerton and surrounding areas.'

July 2022

ALLERTON Junior Athletics Club athletes finished the track and field season in style this weekend, coming 3rd overall in the North East Youth Development League. Together with track-partner club Darlington Harriers, Allerton Juniors have retained their place in the first division track league for next season, finishing behind the larger clubs of Harrogate and North Shields Poly but beating off opposition from Gateshead, Morpeth and Blyth.

Head Coach Glen Hilton said “This is one of the proudest days in my coaching career.   I’m overwhelmed by this awesome group of athletes who just keep on giving.  Massive thanks to my coaches Penny Outhwaite, Julia Oosthuizen, Daniel Cardie, Andrew Throup, Marcela Willis, Holden Outhwaite and John Burke and also to Martin Cann who has officiated at all the NEYDL track meetings.  Lastly thanks to our brilliant parents who have either helped out this summer or driven our athletes all over the county to track competitions.”

Glen continued “There were so many outstanding performances and PBs at that last NEYDL meeting at Middlesbrough Sports Village on Sunday on an extremely hot day.  Our athletes have worked so hard all season and I am really pleased that have achieved the results they deserve.  It has been an absolutely fantastic team effort and I thank all our athletes for giving their absolute best.”

Other successful performances at the Inter-counties included PBs from Tristan Baker in the Inter Boys 3000m in a time of 10.44 minutes and Islay Wilson in the Inter Girls 3000m in a time of 11.19 minutes.  Lucy Boot ran a PB of 2.30 minutes in the Junior Girls 800m and Libby Acton just missed her PB in the Junior Girls 300m in a time of 46.6 seconds.

March 2022

ATHLETES took home a fantastic haul of medals from the Birtley Cross Country Relays on 13th March 2022.  There were some fantastic performances leading to medals in every age group. First up were the U11 Boys (Jake Holmes, Alfie Clarkson and James Throup) whose determination and sprint finishes were exciting to watch. After a fight to the finish, the boys came a very close second and received a well-earned silver medal for their efforts. Not to be outdone, the U11 Girls team (Connie Wilford, Georgia Raw and Abigail Ferguson) also ran hard and fast to finish a close second to the home team of Birtley. Another silver medal in the bag. Next came the U13 Girls, given a great start by Enna Carrick and followed by cracking runs by Lucy Boot and Isobel Cook.  A great team performance to pick up another silver medal. Competing in the final race of the day were the U15 Girls (Libby Acton, Grace Derry and Islay Wilson) who led the race from the outset, finishing first and claiming a Gold Medal in great style.  Following this outstanding performance, the U15 girls have been invited to the North East Cross Country relays in April.

A RECORD three club athletes qualified to join the North Yorkshire team and travelled to the ESAA National Cross Country Championships in Kent on 19th March 2022.  The course was fast and flat, and the weather warm, dry and sunny, which was very different from the hills, mud and cold the runners have experienced for most of the season. First up was Islay Wilson in the Intermediate Girls race who put in a fantastic performance to come 212th out of a field of over 330 despite being one of the younger girls in the race.  Islay said ‘It was a fantastic experience to run in the Nationals and compete against the best runners from each county.’ Islay’s performance was followed by Grace Derry and Libby Acton running in the Junior Girls race.  Both girls excelled with Libby coming 134th and Grace 187th out of a field of 340.
